The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) organized by BRIN and partners highlighted the potential of used cooking oil (UCO) as a sustainable raw material for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Researchers, industry experts, and associations emphasized its role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting circular economy practices, and supporting Indonesia’s energy transition goals. BRIN's researcher Arif Rahman stressed the need for sustainability in SAF development to meet global aviation’s net-zero targets by 2050. Philippe Micone of PT Noovoleum Indonesia shared a successful case of community UCO collection in collaboration with Pertamina, which has gathered over 1 ton of oil per location monthly.
Experts from Pertamina noted the high potential of UCO due to Indonesia’s large palm oil production and fried food culture. Plans are in place to build a New Energy Integrated Terminal (NIT) and supply SAF to major airports. Certification (ISCC) and a robust ecosystem are needed to support the SAF supply chain. Associations like APJETI and AEMJI called for better regulations and traceability to protect collectors and enable compliant exports.
